Quick Response Averts Tragedy as Petrol Tanker Spills on Jebba Expressway
A major disaster was averted on Friday evening, June 6, 2025, following the swift intervention of the Kwara State Fire Service after a petrol-laden tanker spilled its contents at Iyemoja, along the Jebba Expressway near Okoolowo.
The incident, which occurred around 4:30 pm, involved a tanker with registration number RSH 183 XB. Despite the high risk associated with such spills, there was no fire outbreak, thanks to the timely response of fire service personnel.
According to a statement released by Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, Head of Media and Publicity for the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, firefighters immediately drenched both the tanker and the surrounding environment with water to eliminate any chance of ignition.
“The team took swift action to contain the situation and prevent a potential fire disaster,” the statement read. “They remained on standby until the petrol was successfully transferred to an empty tanker.”
The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, praised the professionalism and promptness of his officers, noting that their dedication helped protect lives and property.
He also used the opportunity to appeal to drivers of fuel tankers and other vehicles carrying hazardous materials to observe all safety regulations and drive with caution.
“Transporting flammable materials requires the highest level of responsibility,” he said. “We urge all motorists to remain safety conscious and avoid any actions that could lead to avoidable tragedies.”
