Gunmen Kill Two Police Officers, Abduct Chinese National, Nigerian Worker at Kwara Mining Site
Fear gripped residents of Oreke-Okeigbo in Kwara State following a violent attack by armed men at a mining site in the area, leading to the killing of two police officers and the abduction of two workers, including a Chinese national.
The attack, which took place on the evening of Tuesday, June 4, 2025, at about 6:30 p.m., has sparked outrage and concern over growing insecurity around mining operations in the state.
According to the Kwara State Police Command, the gunmen stormed the mining facility, shot and killed Assistant Superintendent of Police Haruna Watsai and Inspector Tukur Ogah—both from the 45 Police Mobile Force (PMF) in Abuja—before taking their rifles.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, who issued a statement on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, confirmed that the deceased officers were on official duty providing security at the site when they were attacked.
In a further disturbing development, the gunmen abducted two workers from the site: Mr. Sam Xie Wie, a Chinese national, and Mr. David Adenaiye, a Nigerian from Kogi State.
Condemning the incident, the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, described the attack as “barbaric and cowardly,” assuring that tactical and intelligence-led operations have been launched to rescue the victims and arrest the culprits.
“We will not rest until those responsible are brought to justice. The Command is working with other security agencies and local stakeholders to secure the area and prevent a repeat of such a tragedy,” CP Ojo stated.
He urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement by providing credible information that could assist in the ongoing investigations and rescue efforts.
Security patrols have reportedly been intensified in Oreke-Okeigbo and adjoining communities as part of immediate measures to restore public confidence and safety.
