Tinubu rallies governors in Lagos, vows stronger security push amid rising economic pressures

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured Nigerians that his administration will not allow insecurity to derail efforts aimed at protecting vulnerable citizens, as he pledged intensified action to tackle threats across the country.

The President gave the assurance on Sunday while hosting Vice President Kashim Shettima and 23 state governors at his Lagos residence during the Eid-el-Fitr celebration, shortly after returning from an official visit to the United Kingdom.

Tinubu said security concerns dominated his engagements abroad, noting that Nigeria is already strengthening international partnerships to boost its defence capabilities.

“The next phase of our struggle is staring us in the face, and that is the challenge of insecurity in the country,” the President said. “Insecurity is an enemy of development, progress and prosperity. I am making all efforts to ensure that we collectively overcome it.”

He revealed that discussions with global leaders, including Emmanuel Macron, were focused on securing modern equipment and technical support to confront security challenges.

“One of the major discussions in the United Kingdom was on equipment and support. I also had a lengthy discussion with President Macron. They are collaborating with us, and we are reaching out to other nations as well,” Tinubu added.

The President also warned of looming economic strain linked to the Middle East crisis, noting that it could worsen inflation and reduce purchasing power for Nigerians.

“We should care more for the vulnerable. The Middle East crisis will spike inflation and affect our purchasing power. Labour unions and others will naturally demand more support,” he said.

Tinubu urged governors to introduce policies and incentives that would cushion the impact of rising energy and transportation costs on citizens, while also calling for stronger collaboration to defeat criminal elements across the country.

He commended Vice President Shettima for visiting Borno State over recent security concerns, assuring residents of improved protection through the deployment of modern technology.

Speaking on behalf of the governors, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“Together, we must see that the issue of insecurity comes to an end,” AbdulRazaq said, adding that discussions on the creation of state police were progressing.

According to him, the forum is working with security agencies under the supervision of the National Security Adviser to develop a framework that would be presented to the National Assembly for legislative backing.

He also congratulated Tinubu on the recent UK visit, describing it as a significant step in strengthening diplomatic and economic ties.

The meeting, attended by governors from across the federation, highlighted growing concerns over security and economic stability, with both federal and state leaders pledging closer cooperation to address the challenges.
