Argentina defeat France 4-2 on penalty to win World cup

Argentina defeated France 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out to win the World Cup for the third time here Sunday.

Argentina captain Lionel Messi scored twice and France striker Kylian Mbappe scored a hat-trick as a thrilling World Cup final finished 3-3 after extra time at the Lusail Stadium

What a game. It was an incredible drama. Congrats to Lionel Messi & his team.

The Frenchman, Mbape was brilliant, who gave it everything, scoring an hat’trick and also scored his penalty kick.

The Argentines, who eventually won the cup, bounced back after losing to Saudi Arabia in the opener and ended up winning Group C.

France then went on to eliminate Poland, England and Morocco en route to the final as Argentina kicked out Australia, the Netherlands and Croatia.

A background on the trophy-
Its founder, Jules Rimet was a French football administrator who was the 3rd President of FIFA, serving from 1921 to 1954. He was FIFA’s longest-serving president, in office for 33 years.

On Rimet’s initiative, the first FIFA World Cup was held in 1930. The World Cup was named in his honour (The Jules Rimet Trophy).

The next World Cup will be held in 2026 across USA, Canada and Mexico cities, and the qualifying countries will be expanded to 48 teams.

Africa will have at least nine teams up from five at present.

Meanwhile, the individual awards for the outstanding players at this year’s tournament was given to Messi, who win the best player of the tournament

Golden Boots: Kylian Mbappe – France

Golden Ball: Lionel Messi – Argentina
