Late distress call worsens fire damage to three-bedroom building in Ilorin

A three-bedroom building at Kangile Village in Ilorin South Local Government Area of Kwara State has suffered extensive damage following a fire outbreak on Monday.

The Kwara State Fire Service said the fire had spread throughout the building before firefighters could bring the situation under control due to the late notification of the incident.

The service, in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, PFO Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, said it received a distress call and mobilised to the scene at 8:09 a.m. on October 26, 2026.

Although firefighters responded to the emergency, the delay in reporting the incident allowed the flames to engulf the building, resulting in extensive damage.

The cause of the fire had yet to be determined as investigations were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the outbreak.

Reacting to the incident, the Chief Fire Officer, CFS Alabi Muhammed, urged residents to report fire outbreaks immediately to enable firefighters to respond promptly and minimise damage to lives and property.

He stressed that early notification was crucial to effective emergency response, warning that delays in reporting fire incidents could allow flames to spread and cause greater destruction.

Muhammed also advised residents to prioritise fire prevention by ensuring that electrical installations were properly maintained and remaining vigilant against potential fire hazards in their homes.

The Kwara State Fire Service reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state, urging residents to cooperate with emergency responders and report fire incidents without delay.
