Lokoja – The Kogi State Police Command has launched an investigation into the deaths of two police officers following a shooting incident at ASCO Camp in Ajaokuta Local Government Area of the state.

The incident, which occurred on Friday, Oct. 23, involved Corporal Amos Yusuf and Woman Corporal Grace Onimisi, who reportedly died after Yusuf allegedly shot his female colleague before turning the weapon on himself.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, ASP Afusat Oyiza Saliu, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday, saying the circumstances surrounding the deaths were being investigated.

According to the statement, the incident was reported at about 11:04 p.m., prompting the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Ajaokuta to lead a team of officers to the scene.

It said the two officers were immediately evacuated to separate medical facilities for treatment but were subsequently confirmed dead by medical personnel.

Their remains have since been deposited at the mortuary of ASCO Hospital, the statement added.

The police disclosed that an AK-47 rifle and four expended cartridges were recovered from the scene as exhibits in connection with the incident.

The command said the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Although reports suggested that the incident might have been linked to a disagreement over a romantic relationship, the police said the motive remained unknown.

The reports alleged that the two officers had been involved in a relationship that was characterised by disagreements, including allegations of infidelity.

According to the reports, senior officers had previously intervened in an attempt to resolve the differences and prevent further confrontations between the pair.

Yusuf was also alleged to have visited Onimisi’s quarters before the fatal shooting.

However, these accounts have not been officially confirmed by the police, which urged members of the public to refrain from speculation while investigations continued.

The incident has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including how the rifle was accessed and the events leading to the deaths.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, expressed condolences to the families, colleagues and loved ones of the deceased officers.

He assured the public that the command would provide verified updates as appropriate, adding that the investigation would establish the facts surrounding the incident.

The incident has also drawn attention to the tragic loss of two serving officers whose deaths are being investigated by the command.

In an earlier response to an inquiry, Saliu confirmed that the command was aware of the incident, adding that it was under investigation.

The police said further details would be made available as the investigation progressed.
