Nigeria’s Super Eagles Stage Comeback to Beat Madagascar 2-1 in AFCON 2027 Qualifier

Nigeria’s Super Eagles began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign on a winning note, coming from a goal down to defeat Madagascar 2-1 in their opening Group L fixture.

Madagascar took the lead in the 16th minute through E. Kari, who converted a pass from R. Ponti to put the visitors ahead.

Nigeria responded just before the break, with debutant George Ilenikhena equalising in the first minute of added time. Alex Iwobi provided the assist as the Super Eagles went into the interval level at 1-1.

The Nigerian side completed the comeback in the 65th minute when another debutant, Moses Usor, fired home to make it 2-1. Semi Ajayi supplied the assist for the winning goal.

The victory gives Eric Chelle’s side three points from their opening Group L match as they begin their campaign to secure qualification for the 2027 AFCON tournament.

The match was also notable for Ilenikhena and Usor, who earned their first senior international appearances after receiving their maiden Super Eagles call-ups for the September fixtures against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.

Nigeria will return to action on September 29 when they face Guinea-Bissau in their second Group L fixture.
