Israel Reveals New ‘HYPNOSIS’ Anti-Drone System
Israeli Defense Company, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) unveiled its new anti-drone defense system, HYPNOSIS, built to disrupt drones and other aerial weapons that rely on GPS using a soft-kill technique, which means that instead of physically destroying the drones, it confuses them so they can’t figure out where to fly.
The system works with existing defense architecture to prevent drones from reaching their targets.
As a result of the war with Iran, drones and other aerial threats have caused airlines to cancel flights and have endangered ships attempting to sail through the Strait of Hormuz.
Because drones rely on satellite navigation, HYPNOSIS works by blocking GPS signals so they don’t know where to go or by sending them the wrong information so they fly in the wrong direction.
The two main ways to accomplish this are by jamming or spoofing. Jamming creates so much interference that the GPS signal is blocked. This is easy to detect because the system suddenly stops working.
Spoofing is sneakier because it sends the drones incorrect information. This is harder to detect, because the drones continue following directions, not realizing that they are going the wrong way.
HYPNOSIS sets up stations around the protected area that jam and spoof GPS signals, working together with one main control center that coordinates what is happening by analyzing incoming threats and initiating a rapid response.
The system can also work autonomously, making snap decisions without an operator telling it what to do.
Working with other systems, HYPNOSIS can counter multiple attacks coming from several different directions at once.
