KSSM Backs APC Elders’, Stakeholders Call for Credible Consensus Candidate, Urges Traditional Rulers to Remain Neutral

The Kwara South Solidarity Movement (KSSM) has thrown its weight behind the position of prominent elders and stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State, calling for the emergence of a broadly acceptable governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.

The group also reaffirmed its support for the second-term bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and urged traditional rulers across Kwara South to maintain political neutrality in order to preserve the sanctity of the traditional institution.

In a statement issued on Monday and jointly signed by its Coordinator, Adigun Olarewaju Gudugba, and Secretary, Comrade T. D. Ashaolu, KSSM endorsed the position recently advanced by prominent APC leaders, including Chief James Bamisaye Ayeni, Senator M. S. Ajadi, Senator Ahmed Ahmed, Barrister Suleiman Jawondo (SAN), and other party stakeholders.

The group described the elders’ call for the emergence of a credible and unifying governorship candidate as patriotic and strategic, noting that it was aimed at strengthening party cohesion and ensuring the continued electoral success of the APC in the state.

According to the statement, the intervention by the party elders reflects a deep commitment to the unity, stability, and future of the ruling party in Kwara State.

KSSM stated that the contributions and sacrifices of the party elders over the years had helped to build and sustain the APC across wards, local government areas, and senatorial districts in the state.

“Their political experience, grassroots influence, and established structures have consistently contributed to the growth and electoral victories of our great party. Their counsel deserves serious attention and consideration,” the statement said.

The group further appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the leader of the APC, to listen to the concerns and recommendations of the party elders, describing their position as one driven by experience and a desire to preserve the unity and strength of the party.

KSSM also used the opportunity to call on traditional rulers in Kwara South to continue safeguarding the dignity and neutrality of the traditional institution.

The group noted that traditional rulers occupy an important place in society as custodians of culture, symbols of unity, and moral authorities, adding that they should remain above partisan politics.

“It is imperative that our revered royal fathers avoid circumstances capable of exposing the traditional institution to unnecessary controversy, political manipulation, or public misinterpretation,” the statement said.

According to KSSM, one of the factors responsible for the success of the APC in Kwara State over the years was the non-partisan disposition maintained by traditional rulers.

While acknowledging that politicians and public office holders often seek royal blessings and guidance, the group advised traditional rulers to refrain from being used or publicly endorsing or identifying with any governorship aspirant or partisan political interest.

The movement reaffirmed its commitment to inclusiveness, internal democracy, and the collective aspirations of the people of Kwara South, pledging to continue advocating political decisions that promote unity, strengthen democratic institutions, and advance the development of the state.
