Governorship aspirant and public affairs advocate, Dr. Alabi Oluwatoyin Tajudeen (AOT), has congratulated Nigerians on the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, describing June 12 as a landmark in the nation’s democratic journey and a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought for freedom, justice, and representative governance.
In a statement marking the occasion, AOT paid tribute to the heroes and heroines of democracy whose courage and resilience helped shape Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
He said June 12 represents more than a public holiday, noting that it symbolises the triumph of the people’s will and the enduring pursuit of justice, equity, accountability, and good governance.
Dr Alabi specifically honoured the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola and others who made significant sacrifices in the struggle for democracy, saying their contributions laid the foundation for the democratic freedoms Nigerians enjoy today.
While acknowledging the country’s democratic progress since the return to civilian rule, he stressed the need to strengthen institutions, promote transparency, and ensure that the benefits of democracy are felt by all citizens.
According to him, democracy should extend beyond elections to include improved security, quality education, accessible healthcare, economic opportunities, infrastructure development, and a better standard of living.
The governorship hopeful also urged political leaders to embrace accountability, inclusiveness, and people-centred governance in the discharge of their responsibilities.
“As we celebrate Democracy Day, we must renew our commitment to building a nation where justice prevails, opportunities are accessible to all, and the government remains responsive to the needs and aspirations of the people,” he said.
Turning to Kwara State, AOT called for stronger collaboration among citizens, traditional institutions, religious organisations, community leaders, and government agencies to advance peace, development, and prosperity.
He encouraged young Nigerians to participate actively in the democratic process, describing their energy and innovation as vital to the nation’s future.
AOT further urged citizens not to lose faith in Nigeria’s potential, expressing confidence that the country can overcome its challenges through visionary leadership, unity, and collective determination.
He reaffirmed his commitment to the ideals of good governance and inclusive development while wishing Nigerians a peaceful and memorable Democracy Day celebration.
