PRP affirms Senator Buba as Bauchi governorship candidate

By Idris Ayinde
The Peoples Redemption Party has affirmed the senator representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, Shehu Buba, as its governorship candidate for the 2027 election in Bauchi State.
The affirmation was announced by the party’s Deputy National Vice Chairman (North) and overseer of the Bauchi State primary election, Haruna Buhari, after the conclusion of the party’s governorship primary.
Buhari said the exercise formed part of the PRP’s nationwide primary elections conducted across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory in accordance with party guidelines and electoral laws.
According to him, Buba emerged as the sole cleared aspirant for the governorship ticket and fulfilled all constitutional and legal requirements necessary for his affirmation.
“The party constitution provides for affirmation even where there is only one aspirant. The delegates must agree and return the candidate elected, and that process has been completed,” he said.
Buhari added that 766 delegates drawn from the 20 local government areas of Bauchi State participated in the process and endorsed Buba as the party’s candidate.
Delivering his acceptance speech, Buba pledged to implement an N80,000 minimum wage for public servants if elected governor.
“I repeat again, we will implement a minimum wage of N80,000 in the public service,” he declared.
The senator described the PRP as “a movement rooted in justice, equity and the dignity of ordinary Nigerians,” saying the platform represented a continuation of the political ideals of the late Mallam Aminu Kano.
He called for unity within the party, extending an olive branch to supporters of other aspirants.
“To those who supported other aspirants, I extend my hand to you. From this moment forward, we move together,” he said.
Highlighting his legislative and constituency record, Buba said he had served on the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence and chaired the committee on animal husbandry, experiences he said deepened his understanding of security and farmer-herder conflicts.
The senator also outlined interventions he claimed to have undertaken across Bauchi State, including food distribution, support to farmers and religious leaders, installation of transformers and solar street lights, flood relief assistance, and sponsorship of examination registrations for students.
According to him, over 400 students benefitted yearly from sponsored registrations for WAEC, NECO and JAMB examinations.
Buba further said he facilitated federal projects and initiatives, including cybercrime legislation, a federal medical facility and the establishment of a customs training school in Bauchi.
Speaking on his policy agenda, the PRP candidate identified security, economic development, infrastructure, agriculture and mining as key priorities.
On security, he promised to integrate traditional institutions, local security structures and technology-driven surveillance into a coordinated response framework.
“No investor will come where there is insecurity, and no farmer will plant where there is fear,” he said.
The Senator representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, Senator Shehu Buba, had earlier dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC) and declared his membership of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) days after his withdrawal from APC governorship primary election.
The Senator, who is a top governorship contender in APC, stepped away from the exercise barely 24 hours to the party poll, claiming violation of the party’s electoral guidelines and abuse of the country’s constitution.
He announced his decision on Sunday, May 24, 2026, citing the “absence of internal democracy, lack of fairness, marginalisation” of genuine party members, and increasing disregard for the opinions and aspirations of grassroots supporters within the APC.
Buba said his decision to join PRP came after extensive consultations with political associates, youths, women groups, party stakeholders, and supporters across Bauchi South Senatorial District and Bauchi State at large.
He affirmed that PRP remains a political platform built on the principles of justice, transparency, accountability, inclusiveness, and people-oriented leadership, with strong commitment to the democratic values enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The senator stated that his movement to the PRP is aimed at strengthening democratic governance, protecting the interests of the common people, and providing effective and responsive representation for the citizens of Bauchi State.
He stressed that the time has come for patriotic leaders to unite and rescue the country from poverty, unemployment, insecurity, economic hardship, and poor governance.
“Our people deserve better governance, better opportunities, and leadership that truly listens to their concerns. Politics should be about service to humanity, justice, development, and improving the living conditions of the masses,” the senator stated.
