Christians in Ilorin Join Palm Sunday Procession, Bishop S.T.G Adewole Urges Christians To Be Steadfast

Christians in Ilorin, Kwara State, joined worshippers worldwide yesterday in a vibrant Palm Sunday procession, marking the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem and signalling the start of Holy Week. The event also marks the conclusion of the forty-day Lenten fast.

The faithful, representing various denominations, gathered at Saint Barnabas Cathedral, Sabo-Oke, before embarking on a procession that spanned key areas of the city, including Murtala Way, Maraba, Amilegbe, Ipata, Opo-Malu, Emir’s Road, Taiwo Isale, Unity, and the Post Office area, returning to the cathedral for a closing prayer.

Another group of worshippers joined from First Baptist Church, Surulere, converging at Unity Road to join the main march.

Addressing the congregation, the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Kwara State chapter, Right Reverend Sunday Adewole, encouraged Christians to remain steadfast in their faith and service to God.

“Our commitment to God must not waver, even as we face daily challenges. The government and security agencies must also continue to protect lives and property, as public safety remains a priority,” he said.

Bishop Adewole also drew attention to economic hardships, highlighting the rising cost of petroleum products and persistent electricity shortages as issues affecting households and businesses.

Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, represented at the cathedral by the Senior Special Assistant on Religious Affairs, Reverend Timothy Oluwagbemiga Akangbe, urged citizens to pray for the development and progress of Kwara State and Nigeria.

“As we commemorate this sacred week, let us show love, humility, and unity in all our dealings,” he said.

Former CAN Secretary in Kwara State, Pa Olusola Ajolore, stressed the importance of a proactive approach to tackling insecurity, calling on state governments to ensure effective use of security votes.

He also highlighted the need to address unemployment and urged a review of the nation’s constitution to reflect current realities.

Prophet Segun Korode of the Cherubim and Seraphim Movement Church, Ilorin District Headquarters, called on Christians to glorify God for His faithfulness.

“We should emulate the humility of Jesus Christ, who brings salvation to all,” he said.

The Palm Sunday processions in Ilorin underscored unity among Christians while highlighting concerns about security and economic pressures as the state prepares to observe the solemn Passion Week.
