MLSCN Inducts 53 KWASU Medical Laboratory Science Graduates

No fewer than 53 newly qualified medical laboratory scientists from Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, have been inducted into the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN).

The induction, which formed part of the institution’s 7th oath-taking ceremony, brings the total number of medical laboratory scientists produced by the বিশ্ববিদ্যাল to 765.

The ceremony, held on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at the Mini Convocation Arena of the university, formally granted licences to the inductees to practise after the completion of their mandatory one-year internship and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.

Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, described the inductees as exceptional graduates ready to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s healthcare delivery system.

He congratulated them on successfully completing the rigorous academic and professional training, noting that their qualification places them among critical stakeholders in the health sector.

“Kwara State University remains committed to providing practical learning experiences that combine theory with hands-on training. This is evident in our use of the Kwara State University Teaching Hospital for clinical exposure, ensuring our students acquire the necessary skills for professional practice,” he said.

Prof. Jimoh further noted that the upgrade of the Ilorin General Hospital to the Kwara State University Teaching Hospital (KWASUTH) has significantly enhanced clinical training, with 300- to 500-level students of the Department of Medical Laboratory Science now fully deployed to the facility.

He charged the inductees to build on the knowledge and skills acquired during their training, stressing the need for resourcefulness and critical thinking to improve healthcare outcomes.

In his remarks, the Acting Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of MLSCN, Dr. Donald Ibe Ofili, commended the Vice-Chancellor for his leadership, describing the deployment of students to the teaching hospital as a step in the right direction toward strengthening practical training.

Represented by the Council’s Deputy Director, Scientists Registration and Discipline, Dr. George Olajide, Ofili noted that the strong collaboration between the council and the department reflects KWASU’s commitment to maintaining high professional standards.

Also speaking, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Prof. Moyosore Salihu Ajao, said the department has continued to make significant contributions to the healthcare sector both within and outside Nigeria.

Earlier, the Coordinator of the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, Mr. Abdulrazaq Mustapha, disclosed that two graduates earned First Class Honours, 22 obtained Second Class Honours (Upper Division), another 22 graduated with Second Class Honours (Lower Division), while seven earned Third Class degrees.

The ceremony climaxed with the administration of the oath of practice, formally admitting the graduates into the professional body of medical laboratory scientists.
