Honouring Excellence: Rafiu Ajakaye, Beacon of Integrity and Professionalism

Mallam Rafiu Oriyomi Ajakaye is a name synonymous with excellence, integrity and professionalism in journalism and public service. As he marks another milestone birthday, it is fitting to reflect on his remarkable journey—his roots, his rise, and the grace of God that has shaped him into one of Nigeria’s most respected Chief Press Secretaries.

Born on December 30 in Lagos, Mallam Ajakaye hails from Alabe in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State. His life story is a testament to grace, hard work, determination and faith. Raised in a family that valued education and community service, he was nurtured on the virtues of humility, compassion and a strong work ethic—values that have remained the hallmark of his public life.

His academic journey took him to Lagos State University (LASU), where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in History and International Studies, followed by a Master’s degree in the same discipline. This academic progression reflects his deep commitment to learning and self-development.

Mallam Ajakaye’s passion for journalism was ignited after obtaining an Ordinary National Diploma (OND) in Mass Communication. He began writing for various publications, steadily honing his craft and developing a keen sense of storytelling.

His dedication and talent earned him a place as a correspondent with Anadolu Agency, the world’s fifth-largest news agency, where he distinguished himself by covering major events and gaining international exposure and recognition.

In 2011, his career took a significant turn when his path crossed with Dele Belgore, SAN, a prominent Nigerian politician. Recognising his talent and professionalism, Belgore appointed him as Media Aide. This marked the beginning of a productive partnership, during which Mallam Ajakaye played a key role in shaping effective communication strategies and strengthening public engagement.

Over the years, he has worked with several local and international media organisations, earning a reputation for clarity, depth and precision in communication. His ability to distil complex issues into accessible narratives has made him a respected commentator and analyst.

Mallam Rafiu Ajakaye’s appointment as Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, was widely regarded as a natural fit. Governor AbdulRazaq, a high-performing leader who has etched his name in the annals of the state’s history, found in Ajakaye a consummate professional with a deep understanding of governance and public communication.

As Chief Press Secretary, Ajakaye has brought uncommon expertise, grit and professionalism to the role, working collaboratively with colleagues to strengthen the credibility and effectiveness of government communication. His strategic insight and calm disposition have contributed significantly to projecting the administration’s vision and achievements with clarity and integrity.
Beyond his professional accomplishments,

Rafiu Ajakaye is known for his fine character, kindness and humility. A devoted husband and father, he is married to Alhaja Olasumbo Ajakaye (FCA, FCCA), whose strength and support have been a constant source of encouragement. His quiet philanthropy, generosity and commitment to community development reflect a genuine desire to impact lives positively.

As a leader, Mallam Ajakaye exemplifies integrity, openness and professionalism, inspiring trust and confidence in all who encounter him. In 2024, his outstanding contributions to public relations and political communication were recognised with the National Public Relations Award for National Political Communication—an honour that underscores his impact and professionalism.
