President Tinubu Reaches Out to Anthony Joshua After Ogun Crash

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has spoken with Nigerian-British boxing star, Anthony Joshua, following the tragic road accident in Ogun State that claimed the lives of two of the boxer’s associates and left him injured.

The President, who is currently outside the country, made the phone call to personally console Joshua and his family, describing the incident as a painful loss not just to the victims’ families but to the nation at large.

“I spoke with AJ on the phone to personally convey my condolences over the death of his two associates. I wished him well and prayed for him,” President Tinubu said. “He assured me that he is receiving the best care in the hospital.”

Tinubu also reached out to Joshua’s mother, offering prayers and words of comfort, noting that she expressed deep appreciation for the President’s concern and support during the difficult moment.

In the same vein, the President confirmed that he spoke with Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, who was at the hospital with the boxer.

According to him, the governor gave assurances that Joshua would continue to receive top-quality medical attention.

“I also spoke with Governor Dapo Abiodun, who was in the hospital with them. The Governor assured me that he will do everything possible to ensure AJ receives the best possible attention,” Tinubu stated.

Earlier, the President had taken to his official X handle to express heartfelt sympathy to Joshua over the accident, which occurred along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

He described the former heavyweight champion as a symbol of discipline, courage and national pride.

“I sympathise with you and your family as you bear the emotional weight of this unfortunate incident,” Tinubu wrote. “As a sportsman, you have always shown courage, discipline, and unwavering love for our country. These are qualities that have made you a source of national pride.”

He added that moments of grief call for unity and shared compassion, urging Nigerians to stand together in support of one another.

In moments like this, we must encourage one another as brothers and sisters with a shared destiny,” the President said, while praying for Joshua’s quick recovery and for the peaceful repose of the souls of the deceased.

The message was conveyed in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Sunday.
