NSCDC Kwara Refutes False Online Report Linking Commandant to Army Interview

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kwara State Command, has dismissed a viral online report falsely linking its State Commandant, Dr. Umar J.G. Mohammed, to a controversial interview allegedly granted to Trust TV.
The misleading post, which circulated on social media, claimed that “Major General Umar Mohammed,” who supposedly served in the Nigerian Army for 35 years, had criticized military operations during the alleged interview.
In a statement released in Ilorin by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASC 1 Ayoola Michael Shola, the NSCDC clarified that Dr. Umar J.G. Mohammed is not a retired military officer and never served in the Nigerian Army.
“The Command wishes to state clearly that Dr. Umar J.G. Mohammed is the State Commandant of the NSCDC, Kwara State Command. He has never granted any interview to Trust TV or any other media outlet on the said matter,” the statement read.
The Corps described the publication as a deliberate act of misinformation intended to mislead the public and damage the image of a respected public servant. It expressed concern that the false story used the photograph of Dr. Mohammed, thereby confusing unsuspecting members of the public.
“This is either a case of mistaken identity or a calculated attempt to misinform the public. Such acts are not only unprofessional but capable of undermining public trust,” the Command added.
The NSCDC cautioned online publishers, bloggers, and social media users to verify information before sharing, emphasizing that the spread of unverified stories erodes the credibility of responsible journalism.
It urged the public to disregard the report and rely only on official communication channels for credible information about the Command’s activities.
“The NSCDC, Kwara State Command, remains steadfast in its mandate to protect critical national assets, ensure public safety, and maintain professionalism, integrity, and discipline in the discharge of its duties,” the statement concluded.
