Don Urges Govt To Give More Support, Funding  To Media


Government at all levels have been urged to give more support and funding to the media.

Professor Mulikat Ahmad of Department of Science Education, Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, made the call at the Annual Memorial lecture in Honour of Late Professor Shehu Jimoh held at the NUJ Press Centre Ilorin, Kwara State with the theme “Education As A,Vehicle For Socio-Economic Development: “The Role Of The Media”

She noted that denying media professionals their allowances is wrong, stressing that government should provide basic amenities and incentive to do their work well.

She also urged teachers, parents everyone to search their conscience and go back to the drawing board and do the right thing.

She said “Given the pivotal role of education in socio-economic development, there is a need for increased investment in educational initiatives. This includes improving access to quality education, updating the curriculum to align with contemporary needs, and promoting vocational and professional training. To tackle the issue of unemployment in Nigeria, comprehensive strategies should be devised.

“This involves creating a conducive environment for job creation, supporting entrepreneurship, and aligning educational programmes with the demands of the job market.Media, Recognizing the significant influence of media, implementing media literacy programs can empower individuals to critically engage with media content.

“This can enhance awareness, promote civic responsibility, and mitigate the potential negative impacts of media. To address the pervasive issue of poverty, targeted poverty alleviation measures should be implemented. This includes social safety nets, skills development programs, and initiatives to enhance economic opportunities for vulnerable.

“Promoting collaboration between the education sector and media can amplify the impact of both in fostering socio-economic development. Incorporating media literacy into educational curricula and utilizing media tools for educational purposes can create synergies.

“To address insecurity, there should be adequate public awareness and enlightenment on how citizens can be secure from danger to enhance the socio-economic development of the Nigeria citizens.”

Chairman of the event, Former Vice Chancellor University of Ilorin Professor AbdulGaniyu Ambali stressed the need for government to strengthen public school for more children to be in the school

Prof Ambali also stressed the need for media personnel to be well insured as they go through alot of risk in discharging their duties. “Media workers should be insured as they are well dedicated and have family. The federal and state government should look into it.” He said

He lauded Late Professor Jimoh’s unwavering commitment to truth, Philanthropist, commitment to youths organisation, good sense of direction, shared knowledge, caring, good account of himself to Allah. He said
