Kwara Assembly Urges Govt To Curb Refuse Dumps On Road Median, Walkways

Gov AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara state

Kwara State House of Assembly has called on the state government to curb the use of road medians and walkways as refuse dumps in Ilorin Metropolis :

This was contained in a motion moved by Hon. Owolabi O Rasaq (Share/Okeode), seconded by Hon. Aliyu Wahab Opakunle (Afon).

The Speaker of the House, Rt Hon. Engr. Yakubu Danladi Salihu presided at the plenary on Tuesday in Ilorin.

Hon. Owolabi, who moved the motion was concerned that the road medians, walkways and road sides in Ilorin Metropolis are occupied on daily basis with heaps of refuse, thereby consistently exposing the city to untidiness and pollution.

He expressed worry and concern that the current Government has expended huge resources to improve infrastructural and other basic amenities in the State since assumption of office.

“Therefore, the practice of dumping refuse on road medians, walkways and road sides, if not properly checked could downplay the successes recorded from the frantic efforts being made by the Government,” he said.

He was further concerned that the current situation does not paint Kwara State in good picture, especially with several accolades received by the present administration in all sectors, it would be very vital to tackle the situation headlong.

Other Honourable members also contributed to the debate on the motion; Hon. Muhammed Baba Salihu (Okuta/Yashikira), Hon. Aliyu Wahab Opakunle (Afon), Hon. Adetiba-Olanrewaju Raphael (Oke-Ero), Hon. Jimoh Ali Yusuf (Ilorin East), Hon. John Bello (Lanwa/Ejidongari), Hon. Awolola Olumide Ayokunle (Isin).

However, the House resolved as follows:

“Commended His Excellency, the Governor of Kwara State on provision of more waste disposal vehicle to ease the evacuation of refuse in the State;

“Urged His Excellency, the Governor of Kwara State to direct the Ministries of Environment, Health and Communications to continually embark on massive public sensitisation campaign on the need to put an end to use of road medians, walkways and road sides as refuse dumps and it’s effect on the environmental; and

“Urged His Excellency, the Governor of Kwara State to direct the Ministry of Environment to invoke the provisions of relevant sections in the State Environmental Laws and establish mobile courts to bring errant members of the public to book to serve as deterrent to others.

“The motion for Adjournment was moved by the House Leader, Hon. Magaji Abubakar Olawoyin (Ilorin Central) seconded by Hon. Ganiyu Folabi Salahu (Omupo).”

The Rt. Hon. Speaker announced the presence of the Students Representative Council of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, who were at the Gallery to watch the day’s proceedings.
