Expert Urges FG To Tame Insecurity To Boost Mining

Federal Government has been called upon to tame insecurity bedeviling the nation to boost mining in the country.

The National Chairman Nigerian Institution of Metallurgical Mining and Materials Engineers, Dr. Ayo Adeyemo made the call at the Harmony 2021 Conference of Nigerian Institution of Nigerian Institution of Metallurgical Mining and Materials Engineers with the theme: ” The Nigeria Mining Industry In Retrospect And The New Frontiers”

Engr. Adeyemo who also stressed the need for the government to utilize the capacity they have within the country to develop industrially and technologically said

” Utilize the professionals in the various institutions that are affiliated with mining and technolog; Ajakuta can develop without foreigners” he said

He said so many things can be done to boost mining in the country.

“Is only in Nigeria you have a situation where the government will be telling you that they are encouraging foreign investors and Nigeria investor to invest without security there is no where in the world that you have development where you have insecurity;

The government should tame insecurity, it is alarming; if the government could tame it, you will see mining coming up and again let them invest, let them pump money into mining and you will see the industry booming and not only that even in our institutions the government should do more,” he said

Engr Adeyemo also urged students in engineering not to depend on theories they should go for more practical.

“They should read, they should explore the internet to see what is happening in other climes they should not just read to pass examination,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Chairman Local Organising Committe Engr. Aremu Isiaka Na’alla, spoke on the essence of the gathering.

He said, “we are talking about Mining and we are trying to diversify our economy, we want the government to know that apart from oil and gas mining and value addition to solid minerals is the way forward.

“Also, we can engage our youth and the populace generally in a gainful way that is to the government to us all the stakeholders;

“The Department is new so many people don’t know what is metallurgical or materials engineering, they are use to Civil, Electrical engineering.

“Even when Ajakuta Steel Company was formally established back in the early 80s people resigned from Shell Oil company to join Ajakuta.

“What does that mean, it means that there are a lot of resources waiting untapped in metallurgy and material, we are trying to make the people realise what metallurgy and materials engineering means, and to encourage people to go into the profession,” he said.
