Group hails release of funds for backlog of lecturers’ allowance

The Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV) has applauded the release of funds by the federal government for the payment of eight months of accumulated Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) to eligible academic staff in federal tertiary institutions.

It said in a statement signed by its Chairman Chukwudi Enekwechi and Secretary Segun Ogedengbe that the payment which covers the period from January to August 2026 is a demonstration of good faith by the federal government

The statement read: “We note that the payment is in line with the 2025 Federal Government of Nigeria-Academic Staff Union of Universities (FGN-ASUU) Agreement.

“It is also gratifying that the payment is to be applied across the federal government universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

“We commend the move by the federal government as it will guarantee stability in the academic calendar of the tertiary institutions unlike in the past when Nigerian tertiary institutions witnessed prevalent industrial actions by the academic staff.

“It is also a thing of joy that since President Tinubu’s assumption of office the tertiary institutions had witnessed prompt payment of salaries and allowances, as well as assurance of retirement benefits for the academic and non-academic retirees.”

It is worthy of note that for over twenty years ASUU and the federal government were at loggerheads over issues surrounding salaries and allowances until Tinubu came to the saddle and stabilized the sector.
