Police in Kogi Arrest Man for Allegedly Setting Wife Ablaze Over Burnt Clothes

The Kogi State Police Command has arrested a man, identified as Jacob Irewa, for allegedly setting his wife, Berida Irawo, ablaze following a domestic disagreement at Oworo Estate, Felele, Lokoja.
The incident occurred on Friday, August 14, 2026, at about 8:30pm, when the B Division Surveillance Team in Felele received information about the alleged attack and swiftly mobilised to the scene, where the suspect was apprehended.
Preliminary investigation by the police revealed that the dispute started after the victim allegedly burnt some of her husband’s clothes which she believed he no longer used, without seeking his permission.
The suspect was said to have become angry, threatened his wife and allegedly fetched petrol from his motorcycle before setting her ablaze.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, the victim survived the attack and is currently receiving treatment at Honey Gold Hospital, Felele.

The police said the suspect, during interrogation, admitted setting his wife on fire, while investigators have commenced a comprehensive probe to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and gather additional evidence.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, psc, mni, condemned the alleged attack and reaffirmed the command’s zero tolerance for violence, particularly domestic violence.
The commissioner urged members of the public to resolve domestic disagreements through lawful and peaceful means, warning against actions capable of putting lives at risk.
The police said the suspect would be charged to court for prosecution after the conclusion of investigations.
The command also reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring that those responsible for violent crimes are brought to justice.
