Tinubu Celebrates Fasoranti at 100, Hails Afenifere Leader’s Sacrifices for Democracy

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman and leader of Afenifere, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, on the occasion of his 100th birthday, describing him as a symbol of integrity, courage and selfless service to Nigeria.
In a personally signed tribute released on Sunday ahead of Fasoranti’s centenary celebration on May 11, President Tinubu said the nonagenarian’s life of sacrifice, activism and dedication to democratic ideals deserved national recognition and admiration.
The President stated that Fasoranti’s contribution to education, politics and the struggle against military dictatorship had left lasting footprints in Nigeria’s history.
“My joy knows no bounds as we witness Pa Reuben Fasoranti, our father, elder statesman, administrator, pro-democracy activist, prominent politician, and foremost Afenifere leader, attain the milestone age of 100,” Tinubu said.
According to him, the elder statesman distinguished himself through discipline, honesty and commitment to noble causes, adding that his life remained “a metaphor for integrity, honesty, dedicated service to the nation and true leadership.”
Tinubu praised Fasoranti’s educational accomplishments and commitment to human development, noting that the Afenifere leader devoted many years to teaching and establishing schools in Ondo State.
He highlighted Fasoranti’s political journey as one of the last surviving disciples of late nationalist Chief Obafemi Awolowo, recalling his role in the defunct Action Group and later the Unity Party of Nigeria.
The President also commended Fasoranti’s performance as Commissioner for Finance in old Ondo State during the administration of late Chief Adekunle Ajasin between 1979 and 1983, saying his prudence and integrity helped stabilize the state’s finances.
Tinubu further acknowledged Fasoranti’s role during the military era, describing him as one of the leading voices that resisted dictatorship and campaigned for the return of democratic governance.
“Pa Fasoranti’s voice became one of the rallying voices against military dictatorship, demanding the return of democracy to the land,” the President said.
He added that despite surviving an assassination attempt allegedly linked to the late military regime of General Sani Abacha and enduring personal tragedies, including the killing of his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, the elder statesman remained steadfast and resilient.
Tinubu used the occasion to appreciate Fasoranti for supporting his presidential ambition and offering prayers that eventually preceded his emergence as President.
“At the start of my campaign for the presidency, I visited Pa Fasoranti in Akure. Baba prayed for my electoral victory, saying he would live to witness my ascension to the presidency. God answered his prayer through my victory and eventual ascendancy to the top office,” he stated.
The President prayed for God to grant the elder statesman more years in good health, while thanking him for what he described as his invaluable service to Nigeria and continued support for the Renewed Hope Administration.
