Ilorin Man Dies in Fire While Clearing Land in Irewolede

Tragedy struck on Monday morning in Ilorin as a 73-year-old man, Pastor Awolola, lost his life while attempting to clear undergrowth on his property in the Irewolede area of Kwara State.

The incident occurred at around 11:58 a.m. on Cemetery Road, according to the Kwara State Fire Service.

A statement issued by PFO Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, PRO of the Fire Service, confirmed that Pastor Awolola had set fire to undergrowth around an incomplete building on his land, which had a fenced perimeter and a gated entrance.

Investigations revealed that the fire quickly spread, blocking the only exit from the premises. The victim reportedly tried to escape through the fence, but the advancing flames prevented his escape, resulting in his death.

Firefighters arrived promptly at the scene and successfully extinguished the blaze, preventing it from spreading to neighbouring properties. The lifeless body of Pastor Awolola was recovered and handed over to the Community Chairman, Mr. Sunday Nuha, for further action.

CFS Alabi Muhammed, Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, expressed deep regret over the incident.

“This tragic death is a harsh reminder of the dangers of burning bush or undergrowth, especially during dry and windy conditions. Such actions are unpredictable and can lead to avoidable loss of lives and property,” he said.

The Director urged residents to adopt safer methods for clearing land and to report fire outbreaks immediately.

He added, “The Kwara State Fire Service remains committed to protecting lives and property across the state, and we appeal to the public to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines at all times.”
