Kwara Polytechnic Shuts Campus After Student Protest Over NYSC Break

Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, has been temporarily closed following a clash between students and police over a three-week break granted for the ongoing NYSC orientation camp.

The Management explained that the break, effective from Monday, 19th January, 2026, was necessary to ensure the smooth conduct of the National Youth Service Corps program, which the State Government had designated the Polytechnic as a temporary orientation camp due to security concerns in the state.

While previous NYSC exercises coincided with students’ holidays or partial attendance, the current session involves fully resumed students. The Management noted that the directive sparked unrest as some students expressed frustration over being asked to pause their academic activities shortly after returning from the Christmas and New Year break.

“The tension escalated at the Polytechnic’s main gate, requiring police intervention,” said AbdulHafis Amin, Acting Registrar. “Unfortunately, some officers exceeded their mandate by deploying tear gas into the campus, affecting both students and staff. Our Chief Security Officer was among those injured.”

In response to the incident, Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRasaq has ordered the closure of the Polytechnic to safeguard lives and property.

The Management urged students, staff, and stakeholders to remain calm and cooperate as discussions continue with relevant authorities to resolve the situation.

“Our priority is the safety of the Polytechnic community. We are committed to working with all parties to ensure a swift and peaceful resolution,” Amin added.
