Army warns Nigerians against fake social media accounts linked to COAS admin

The Nigerian Army has warned members of the public to beware of fake social media accounts falsely claiming to represent or be associated with the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu.

In a statement issued by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, the Army said it had observed a disturbing rise in fraudulent accounts operated by individuals posing as the Chief of Army Staff on various social media platforms.

The Army clarified that Lieutenant General Shaibu does not operate or maintain any official social media account on any platform.

Members of the public were advised to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant against scammers who may use such fake accounts to defraud unsuspecting individuals, solicit funds or spread misinformation in the name of the Chief of Army Staff or the Nigerian Army.

The statement urged Nigerians not to engage with, respond to or share content from such accounts, warning that doing so could expose them to fraud or manipulation.

The Nigerian Army said it has begun taking necessary steps to identify and apprehend those behind the fake accounts, with a view to prosecuting them in line with existing laws.

The Army reassured Nigerians of its continued commitment to safeguarding the lives of citizens and protecting the territorial integrity of the country as provided for in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
