Mob Kills Woman Over False Kidnap Claim, Police Warn Against Jungle Justice
A tragic incident unfolded in Ilorin on Thursday when a woman suspected to be destitute was lynched by a mob over false claims of kidnapping. The incident occurred around 9:00 a.m. in the Ipata area of the city.
According to the Kwara State Police Command, members of the community allegedly mistook the woman for a kidnapper and descended on her, beating her severely before security operatives arrived. She was rushed to the General Hospital, Ilorin, but doctors later confirmed her dead from injuries sustained during the assault.
Her body has since been deposited in the hospital mortuary as police begin investigations into the circumstances surrounding her death.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, condemned the attack, describing it as “a dangerous act that undermines the rule of law and puts innocent lives at risk.”
He stressed that no security issue can be solved through mob action.
“Security challenges cannot be resolved through jungle justice. Rather, they worsen insecurity and erode public safety. We urge residents to remain calm, law-abiding, and to always report suspicious persons or movements to the nearest police station,” the CP said.
He appealed to the people of Kwara State to partner with the police in promoting peace, law, and order, while rejecting mob violence in all its forms.
