Kwara Poly Moves to End Campus Crime, Bans ‘Sign-Out’ Tradition

In a renewed push for safety and discipline, the management of Kwara State Polytechnic has declared its commitment to partnering with the Nigeria Police to stamp out criminal activities within and around the institution.

The Rector, Engr. Dr. Abdul Jimoh Mohammed, made this known during a courtesy visit to the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, in Ilorin. He was accompanied by principal officers of the Polytechnic.

Dr. Abdul expressed gratitude to the police for their continued support in maintaining peace, especially amid recent land encroachment issues threatening the institution’s boundaries.

He also raised concerns over student misconduct, particularly the so-called “sign-out” celebration—a post-examination ritual banned since the 2022/2023 academic session.

“We are not only concerned about cultism and land encroachment; this ‘sign-out’ tradition is another area of worry. Hoodlums hide under the guise of celebration to cause chaos. This is why we have banned it completely, and any student found participating will face disciplinary measures,” the Rector stated.

He urged the police to intensify efforts in curbing illegal activities both on and off-campus, assuring that the institution remains focused on raising future leaders, not enabling criminal elements.

In response, CP Adekimi Ojo pledged the command’s continued cooperation with the Polytechnic, acknowledging the importance of a crime-free academic environment.

“A safe and peaceful learning space is non-negotiable. We will continue to work with school authorities to tackle cultism, trespassing, and other crimes. But this must be a collective effort involving all tertiary institutions in Kwara State,” the CP said.

Both parties agreed to strengthen their partnership to ensure the safety of students and staff, and to protect the institution from threats that undermine its educational mission.
