Dettol, WBFA Induct 34 Students as Hygiene Ambassadors in Ifelodun

Dettol, in partnership with the Wellbeing Foundation Africa (WBFA), has inducted 34 students as ambassadors of its Hygiene Quest programme in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.

Speaking at the induction ceremony held in Olunlade, Director of Programming for WBFA, Mr. Williams Awotunde, said the initiative was aimed at nurturing a culture of hygiene and health among young people.

Represented by the National Programmes Manager, Mr. Kehinde Akinsola, Awotunde urged the new ambassadors to take their roles seriously and serve as symbols of hope, health, and hygiene in their schools and communities.

“This marks the beginning of a journey where each ambassador becomes a torchbearer of change. You are not just participants, but leaders, innovators, and changemakers,” he said.

He explained that the Hygiene Quest programme, supported by Reckitt Benckiser, makers of Dettol, is designed to create lasting behavioural change through the establishment of Hygiene Quest Clubs in schools.

These clubs will continue advocacy efforts, lead hygiene campaigns, and conduct Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) activities long after the workshops are concluded.

The inducted students were also taught proper handwashing techniques to prevent the spread of germs and maintain personal hygiene.

In his goodwill message, the Kwara State Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, commended the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful.

Represented by the Deputy Director and Desk Officer, Mr. Yisa Joshua, he encouraged the students to share the knowledge gained with their peers.

Education Secretary for Ifelodun Local Government, Comrade Julius Oyebanji, also praised the effort, stating, “This workshop has come at a crucial time. I’m glad we are catching them young. Handwashing is essential for disease prevention, and these ambassadors must spread the message to friends and families.”

Also speaking, Assistant Director at the Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Mrs. Aminat Ahmed, urged the students to take their new role seriously, stressing that their induction comes with a responsibility to promote hygiene.

A major highlight of the event was a spelling bee competition, with winners emerging in both junior and senior categories.

These winners will go on to compete with their counterparts from other local governments for the title of the best hygiene-focused school in Kwara State.

Seventeen schools also received handwashing workstations to support their newly established Hygiene Quest Clubs.
