Nigeria Loses a Legend: Tinubu Pays Tribute to Peter Rufai

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has joined millions of Nigerians in mourning the death of former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, describing him as “a national hero who gave his all for Nigeria on and off the pitch.”

Rufai, popularly known as “Dodomayana,” died in Lagos on Thursday at the age of 61 after a brief illness. His death has sparked an outpouring of grief across the country, especially among football fans who still remember his crucial role in Nigeria’s historic 1994 Africa Cup of Nations victory and the country’s debut at the FIFA World Cup in the same year.

In a heartfelt message, President Tinubu recalled Rufai’s remarkable impact on Nigerian football, hailing him as “one of the true patriots who etched his name in gold.”

“I remember with deep pride the confidence, skill, and leadership Peter Rufai brought to the Super Eagles, particularly during our triumph in Tunisia ‘94 and Nigeria’s debut at the USA ‘94 World Cup.

His presence between the sticks inspired a generation and gave Nigerians unforgettable moments of joy,” Tinubu stated.

The President also paid tribute to Rufai’s contributions beyond his playing career, noting how the goalkeeper dedicated his retirement years to grooming young talent through his Staruf Football Academy.

“Peter didn’t just walk away after retirement. He stayed in the game, creating a path for young Nigerians to dream and achieve through football. He showed that giving back is the true legacy of a champion,” Tinubu added.

Born Waidi Peter Rufai, the legendary goalkeeper hailed from the royal family of Idimu in Lagos State. He began his career with Stationery Stores in 1980 and went on to play professionally in Belgium, Portugal, Spain, and the Netherlands, blazing a trail for Nigerian players in European leagues.

President Tinubu extended his condolences to the Rufai family, the Nigerian football community, and all lovers of the game. He prayed for the repose of the late goalkeeper’s soul and comfort for those left behind.

As the nation remembers Rufai, tributes continue to pour in from former teammates, fans, and football administrators, all united in the grief of losing a true legend of Nigerian sports.
