Dr. Oluwatoyin Alabi, a respected public affairs advocate and President of the Igbaja Progressive Union Executive Council (IPUNEC), has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Senator Cornelius Olatunji Adebayo, a former Kwara state governor and Communications Minister.
In a heartfelt condolence message, Dr. Alabi commiserated with the Adebayo family, the people of Igbaja community, and the entire Kwara State, describing the late statesman as “a towering figure whose life and leadership shaped the history of our state.”
Cornelius Adebayo, who was born at Igbaja in Ifelodun Local Government Area, with family background in Oke Onigbin, Kwara state, died in the early hours of Wednesday in Abuja at the age of 84. Born on February 24, 1941, he served as Governor of Kwara State in 1983 before the military takeover. He was later elected a senator and went on to serve as Minister of Communications during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration.
Dr. Alabi noted that Senator Adebayo’s life was marked by integrity, courage, and an unwavering commitment to public service.
“He was a man of wisdom and principle, who inspired generations through his devotion to good governance and democratic ideals,” she said.
While recalling his illustrious contributions to the development of Kwara and Nigeria at large, Dr. Alabi urged both leaders and citizens to emulate the virtues of honesty, patriotism, and selfless service for which the late Adebayo was known.
He offered prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul and comfort for his family, stating: “May God grant the Adebayo family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss and may the legacy of our dear elder statesman continue to light the path for future generations.”
The passing of Senator Adebayo marks the end of an era for Kwara State, especially for the Igbaja community where his journey began.
