Hamas Rejoins Hostage Talks Following Launch of Major IDF Offensive, Says Defense Minister Katz
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that Hamas has resumed negotiations over a potential hostage deal following the launch of the IDF’s new military campaign in Gaza, Operation Gideon’s Chariots.
Katz stated that the Hamas delegation in Doha returned to the table after previously refusing to engage, a shift he directly attributed to the intensity of the IDF’s renewed offensive.
He emphasized that this development occurred without Israel resuming humanitarian aid deliveries or agreeing to a ceasefire.
“The bravery of our soldiers, national unity, and the resolve of our leadership are improving the chances of securing the hostages’ return,” Katz said.
In a statement from the Gaza border, IDF spokesperson Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin announced that five IDF divisions are now engaged in the latest phase of the military campaign inside the Gaza Strip, focused on dismantling Hamas.
“We’ve entered a new phase of combat,” Defrin said. “This operation will see us expand our operational presence, divide the Strip strategically, and relocate civilians for their protection in areas where our forces are active.”
He added that the IDF is applying key takeaways from previous battles in Gaza and shifting fully into an aggressive posture.
“Unlike before, our focus is now a sustained offensive aimed at defeating Hamas wherever we operate,” he stated.
