Kwara Fire Service Prevents Disaster as Diesel Tanker Collides with Truck at Shao Junction

The Kwara State Fire Service has averted a potential disaster following a road traffic accident involving two articulated trucks and a diesel tanker at Shao Junction, along the Kanbi/Olooru Expressway.

According to a statement signed by PFO II Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, Head of Media and Publicity for the Fire Service, the incident occurred when a 45,000-litre capacity diesel tanker, bearing registration number T-16758LA, collided head-on with a stationary truck. The impact damaged the tanker’s compressed air tank and air lines, leading to brake failure.

The situation was made worse by ongoing road construction on the opposite lane, which forced all vehicles to use a single route, hindering easy maneuvering and contributing to the accident.

Firefighters quickly responded to the distress call, thoroughly wetting the area and the tanker to prevent a fire outbreak. In a coordinated operation, the diesel was transloaded into an empty tanker (registration number AAA-527YA) using a siphoning method.

The operation was successfully carried out with the support of security agencies, including the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Kwara State Traffic Management Authority (KWATMA), who maintained order at the scene.

The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service expressed gratitude to the security agencies for their prompt support, which enabled a smooth and safe response to the emergency.
