Kogi Govt Rejects Jailbreak Claim, Alleges Internal Collusion in Koton Karfe Prison Escape

The Kogi State Government has dismissed claims of a jailbreak at the Medium Security Correctional Centre in Koton Karfe, insisting that the escape of 12 inmates in the early hours of Monday was likely aided by internal collusion.

The escape, which occurred without structural damage to the facility, has raised suspicions of an inside job, especially as it comes six years after over 200 inmates fled when a flood submerged the prison walls.

Confirming the incident, the state’s Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, described it as “unfortunate” but rejected the notion of a conventional jailbreak.

“The jailbreak theory is unacceptable to the Kogi State Government as there are clear evidences of internal compromise and collaboration leading to the unfortunate breach,” Fanwo stated.

He emphasized that the circumstances surrounding the escape necessitate a thorough investigation to identify any internal or external accomplices.

“The security of Kogi State remains our top priority, and we expect the relevant agencies to leave no stone unturned in addressing this incident,” he added.

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has since directed the State Security Adviser to work closely with the Federal Correctional Centre and other security agencies to prevent a recurrence.

Meanwhile, one of the 12 escapees has been rearrested and returned to custody.

The Kogi State Government also commended the prompt response of correctional officials and security agencies in managing the situation.

Fanwo urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals, warning that anyone found harboring escaped inmates would be held accountable.
