Rivers Assembly Backs Tinubu’s Emergency Rule, Blames Fubara for Crisis

The Rivers State House of Assembly has declared full support for President Bola Tinubu’s decision to impose a state of emergency in the state, pledging to cooperate with the newly appointed Sole Administrator.

Speaker Martin Amaewhule, in a statement on Tuesday, assured residents that the Assembly would respect Tinubu’s directive despite initial concerns.

“We assure our constituents that we will abide by this declaration, even though it is not what we prayed for. Mr. President has acted in the best interest of the country,” Amaewhule said.

The Speaker blamed Governor Siminalayi Fubara for the political turmoil, accusing him of repeatedly disobeying court rulings and obstructing the functions of the Assembly.

“The condition of our dear Rivers State today is mainly because of the malfeasance of the governor, who serially disobeyed court judgments and obstructed the Rivers State House of Assembly,” he alleged.

Amaewhule urged the people of Rivers State to remain calm as former Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Ibokette Ibas, takes over as Sole Administrator. He assured that the Assembly would support efforts to restore stability in the state.

President Tinubu, on Tuesday, declared a state of emergency in Rivers, suspending Governor Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the House of Assembly for six months. The decision, he said, was necessary to address the ongoing political instability in the state.
