Nigerian Army Celebrates WASA 2024 in Ilorin, Promotes Unity and Cultural Heritage
The Nigerian Army’s Sobi Cantonment in Ilorin on Saturday celebrated the 2024 West African Social Activities (WASA), a cultural event aimed at promoting unity, honoring Nigeria’s diverse cultural heritage, and reflecting on the institution’s achievements.
The Commandant of the Nigerian Army Institute of Science Education and Technology (NAISET), Maj. Gen. Sumaila Ibrahim, emphasized the significance of WASA as a platform for fostering camaraderie among officers, their families, and host communities. He highlighted the event’s role in showcasing Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity through performances and interactions.
“The event provides an opportunity for officers and men of the Nigerian Army to wine and dine with their families, friends, and host communities, while also celebrating our achievements as Nigerians,” Ibrahim said.
Maj. Gen. Umar Babangida, Provost of the Nigerian Army College of Education (NACOE), commended the synergy among security agencies in Kwara State, describing it as crucial to maintaining peace and security. He added that WASA serves as a moment for the army to reflect on its successes and reaffirm its commitment to discipline, unity, and excellence.
“This platform reminds us of our collective identity as Nigerians, enriched by our varied traditions yet united by shared values. It is a reminder that discipline and togetherness are the foundation of excellence,” Babangida said.
He further noted that NAISET and NACOE continue to promote diversity, inclusivity, and professional excellence while celebrating Nigeria’s cultural heritage.
The event featured colorful performances, including traditional dances, music, and displays that highlighted the beauty of Nigeria’s ethnic heritage. Babangida concluded by praying for continued unity and more opportunities to celebrate achievements in the coming years.
WASA is an annual tradition of the Nigerian Army designed to foster unity and strengthen ties between military personnel and the communities they serve.
