Tinubu Hails Governors for Backing Tax Reform Bills, Calls for Legislative Action

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended the 36 state governors for their unanimous endorsement of the Tax Reform Bills currently under deliberation at the National Assembly.

The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, highlighting Tinubu’s appreciation for the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and their commitment to national development.

“Thursday’s productive consultation between the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and the Presidential Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy is a commendable example of cooperation between the Federal and State governments,” the statement quoted President Tinubu.

The President praised the NGF Chairman, Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, for rallying governors across political and regional divides to support the transformative tax bills aimed at revitalizing the economy and creating a more attractive investment climate.

“Updating the country’s outdated tax laws is essential to promoting national interests, improving Nigeria’s economic competitiveness, and attracting local and foreign investments,” Tinubu noted.

He also lauded the efforts of the Progressive Governors Forum, the Northern Governors Forum, and other coalitions that facilitated a bipartisan resolution of disputes surrounding the tax reforms.

Tinubu emphasized that the Tax Reform Bills are pro-poor initiatives designed to advance Nigeria’s development and underscored the importance of constructive dialogue in resolving differences.

He further called on the National Assembly to expedite action on the legislative process for the reforms to ensure the country begins to reap their benefits without delay.

The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to partnering with state governors to foster economic growth, peace, and stability across the nation, urging stakeholders to actively engage in refining the proposed tax laws.
