Child Protection Expert Urges Couples To Receive Counselling Before Going Into Parenting

A Child Protection Expert & Life Coach, Mrs Gbemisola Osagede-Daramola, has advised the public and aspiring couples in the country to attend counselling session before embracing parenting role.

Daramola, who gave the advise in Ilorin on Friday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said there are parenting skills needed before accepting the role of parenting.

According to her, most couples and parents do not understand their role of mentoring and training their wards before jumping into parenting.

She stressed the need for parenting academy which would teach young couples rudiment of parenting.

” Before you go into parenting, go for pre-marital counsel. You can’t understand everything on google.

” After a professional counsel, you can school yourself by reading books and google search for guidance,” she said.

The expert also advised parents to create time for their children,rather than prioritizing their businesses and works to the detriment of their wards.

She advocated the need for parents to balance their daily activities with that of their children for proper upbringing.

Daramola ,who is also an author also emphasized the need for parents to start training their children early and not wait till they are mature.

She advised parents to talk to their children in language they understand inorder to fix them in right channel earlier.

” Learn to understand your children language and also talk to them in language they understand.

” Start by calling them their names which will give them identity. Communicate with them and make them feel safe to express selves to you as parent,” the expert echoed.

She also warned parents to give their children adequate training from home and stop relying on school teachers to do everything.
