NSCDC Kwara Command Assures Farmers of Enhanced Security, Resolves 196 Farmer-Herder Conflicts in One Year

 

In line with the mandate given to the Agro Rangers Unit of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to boost food security by protecting farmers from malicious destruction of their farmlands and addressing farmer-herder clashes, the NSCDC Commandant in Kwara State, Dr. Umar J.G. Muhammed, has reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to safeguarding the agricultural sector in the state.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday, at the State Command Headquarters in Ilorin, Commandant Umar highlighted the achievements of the Agro Rangers Unit, which has successfully resolved 196 cases of farmer-herder conflicts over the past year.

He credited these results to the rigorous training of Agro Rangers personnel in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) techniques, which have enabled the Corps to mediate conflicts effectively across the 16 local government areas of Kwara State.

“The Agro Rangers personnel have been trained and certified in Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms,” Commandant Umar stated.

“This allows them to mediate conflicts between itinerant herders and sedentary farmers, significantly reducing farmer-herder clashes and promoting peaceful coexistence in agrarian communities.”

Additionally, Commandant Umar underscored the Corps’ ongoing efforts to secure state-owned, corporate, and individual farmlands, including the strategic deployment of NSCDC personnel to areas like Shonga Farm in Edu Local Government Area.

These deployments are supported by continuous surveillance and routine patrols, ensuring that both peasant farmers and agro-allied industries receive adequate protection.

He reiterated the Corps’ unwavering dedication to promoting food security and sustainable agricultural growth in Kwara State, emphasizing that the NSCDC will continue to protect farmers and their investments across the state.
