Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Sacks Defense Minister
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu says he has fired Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant due to trust issues and “gaps” between them in the management of the war.
Yisrael Katz, until now Israel’s foreign minister, has been nominated by Netanyahu as defense minister.
My utmost commitment as the Prime Minister of Israel is to ensure Israel’s security and lead us to decisive victory.
In the midst of war, more than ever, full trust is required between the Prime Minister and the Defense Minister.
Unfortunately, although in the initial months of the campaign there was such trust and highly productive cooperation, in recent months, that trust between me and the Defense Minister has eroded.
Significant differences emerged between Gallant and me regarding the management of the campaign. These differences were accompanied by statements and actions that contradicted the decisions of the government and the cabinet.
I made numerous attempts to bridge these gaps, but they only widened. These issues became public in an unacceptable manner, and worse, they reached the ears of our enemies, who gained satisfaction and benefit from them.
Everyone who knows me is aware that I encourage open debates, discussions, and differing opinions as part of my decision-making process. However, the trust crisis between the Defense Minister and me became public knowledge, and this crisis no longer allows for the effective management of the campaign.
It’s not just me saying this; most government and cabinet members share the sentiment that we cannot continue this way.
Therefore, today, I have decided to terminate the tenure of the Defense Minister. In his place, I have decided to appoint Minister Yisrael Katz. Yisrael Katz has already demonstrated his capabilities and contributions to national security as Foreign Minister, Finance Minister, and Intelligence Minister for five years, and, importantly, as a member of the Security Cabinet for many years.
He brings a remarkable combination of extensive experience and operational capability. Known as a bulldozer with a blend of responsibility and quiet determination, these qualities are crucial for managing the campaign.
Additionally, I spoke today with Minister Gideon Sa’ar and invited him and his faction to join the coalition and take on the role of Foreign Minister. As a long-time member of the government and the cabinet, Gideon Sa’ar brings extensive experience and sound judgment in matters of policy and security, making him a significant addition to our leadership team.
His joining, along with his faction, will enhance the stability of the coalition and the government, which is crucial at all times, especially during wartime. I am confident that these steps will strengthen the government and the cabinet, ensuring they work together harmoniously and cooperatively for the security of the State of Israel, for the citizens of Israel, and for our victory.
