Chemical Pathologist Calls on Nigerian Doctors to Adopt Emerging Technologies for Improved Healthcare

Prof. Adekunle Okesina, former Chairman of the National Committee of Provosts of College of Health Sciences, has urged medical practitioners in Nigeria to embrace emerging technologies, including local innovations, to enhance healthcare delivery and improve patient outcomes.

Speaking in Ilorin during his retirement and 70th birthday celebration, Prof. Okesina highlighted the importance of integrating new technologies into medical practice, especially Artificial Intelligence (AI), which he believes could address some of the challenges faced by Nigerian doctors.

“Cross-fertilisation of ideas, knowledge, and expertise in the medical field is crucial to developing new solutions, improving medical devices, and fostering research,” he stated.

Prof. Okesina, a lecturer at the University of Ilorin, stressed that collaboration and knowledge-sharing among healthcare professionals would lead to significant breakthroughs in patient care.

The event also featured a lecture by Prof. Simeon Adebisi, the Immediate Past Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Benue State University, titled Roles and Responsibilities of Chemical Pathologists in the Concept of Multidisciplinary Team Approach in Patient Management.

Adebisi emphasized the need for a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, noting that, “Gone are the days when one doctor handles all aspects of a patient’s condition. Now, bringing together different specialties ensures better patient outcomes.”

Prof. John Obafunwa, Director-General of the Nigeria Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), also commended Prof. Okesina’s contributions to the medical field, wishing him a fulfilling retirement.
