The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi state has inducted 60 final year students of the Industrial Chemistry department of the institution into the Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN).

Speaking during the induction ceremony on Saturday, the Acting Vice Chancellor of the school, Prof. Mohammed Kunya, said that for a society to prosper, it needed entrepreneur-individuals who could see beyond conventional boundaries, identify unique opportunities, and turn challenges into profitable ventures.

According to him, Chemists are uniquely positioned to do this, given their training in problem-solving, research, and analytical thinking, urging the inductees to consider the vast potential that lies in the intersection of chemistry and entrepreneurship.

“The theme of the programme today;”Empowering the Next Generation of Chemists: Shaping a Future of Innovation and Impact” is more than just a reflection of our aspirations for you but a clarion call to action.

Represented by Prof. Sama’ila Idi, the Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences, ATBU, Kunya added that “you hold in your hands the potential to shape a future that leverages chemistry’s power to bring about positive change.

“The impact of Chemistry on society is profound, affecting everything from the water we drink to the technology we use, to the medicines that save lives.

“With deep understanding of chemistry concepts and strong dedication to research, you can help solve some of the greatest challenges of our time, including environmental degradation, energy sustainability, food security and public health”.

The acting VC urged the inductees to remember that their education has equipped them not just with scientific knowledge, but with the ability to innovate.

He called on them not to shy away from thinking and planning big and ensure that the principles of sustainability and social responsibility guide them as they build enterprises that would not only contribute to economic success but also positively impact society.

Also speaking, Dr Auwal Mahmud, the Chairman of Chemical Society of Nigeria, Bauchi state chapter, congratulated the Inductees and assured them that the horizon is wide enough for them to thrive.

Mahmud, who is also the Head of Department (HOD), Department of Chemistry, ATBU also charged them to be professionals and introduce positivities into the already saturated Chemical environment in the country.

One of the inductees who spoke with newsmen at the sidelines of the ceremony, Ishola Michael Adegboola, expressed joy and happiness that the day finally came for them after a 5 year study took them 7 years to complete due to the incessant industrial action by ASUU and other staff unions.
