Senate President urges Nigerians to support FG to overcome security challenges, others

Sen. President Ahmed Lawan says Nigerians have no option than to continue to support the country and its leaders so as to overcome the country’s security and socio-economic challenges.

Lawan, who stated this when he fielded questions from newsmen in Abuja, said it was wrong for anyone to blame President Muhammadu Buhari for the ongoing security challenges in some parts of the country.

According to him, this is the time for Nigerians to come together regardless of their religious, ethnic or political persuasions to find tangible solutions to the nation’s challenges.

He called on all elected leaders across the three tiers of government to always avoid ethnic, religious or regional sentiments so as to promote unity and harmony among the nation’s diverse groups. 

He said: “We must have faith in ourselves, in our country, and in our leaders no matter the challenge we must continue to support our leaders because this is the only way to go.

“I believe that we have enriched ourselves and our spirits in the sense that we practice the fasting period of 30 days in a very determined way that this is a time that Nigeria needs a lot of prayers for the country,

“This is the time for Nigerians to come together regardless of their religious, ethnic or political persuasions to face the challenges our country is facing at the moment.

“I believe that these lessons will remain with us. I will take this opportunity to appeal to all Nigerians that the president himself is doing so much, and it’s not everything that the president does that you see.

“When the president will see the service chiefs, the CDS, the Inspector-General of Police, DG, DSS, DG, NIA and so on, you would see, probably.

“But, when he consults with other stakeholders across the country, it is not everyone that comes on the television or the radio that this is what I have done with the president or the president says this.’’

According to Lawan, the president is reaching out to all critical stakeholders in the Nigeria Project to ensure safety of lives and property of all citizens.

He, therefore, urged leadership at all levels to partner with the president in the task of restoring normalcy in all troubled areas across the country.

“So, the president is reaching out to all the stakeholders and I believe that as leaders, particularly those of us that are elected at all levels of government, we should avoid partisanship, we should avoid regionalism, we are all leaders and we are in this together.

“The solutions must come from us regardless of what level of government we are – whether at the federal level or the state level or even at the local government,’’ he added.

The speaker, who also spoke on the importance of the just concluded 30 days fasting period by Muslim faithful, urged Nigerians to be their brothers’ keepers. (NAN)
