KU8+: Synergy between universities and industries essential for addressing  multifaceted challenges – Prof Yusuf

The Vice-Chancellor,  Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, Prof. Noah Yusuf says the synergy between universities and industries is essential for addressing the multifaceted challenges we face from climate change and resource scarcity to technological disruption and social inequality.

Prof. Yusuf stated this at the opening of the 2nd KU8+ International Conference being held at the Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin

According to the Vice-Chancellor, the collaboration among the nine universities in Kwara State would assist in harnessing their collective strengths to create sustainable solutions that would be of huge benefit to all.

“This conference aims to: strengthen the ties between academia and industry, facilitate the exchange of ideas, resources, and expertise; encourage innovative approaches to research and development, leverage the unique strengths of both universities and industries; develop educational programmes and initiatives that prepare students for the dynamic demands of the modern workforce, and, advocate for sustainable practices and policies that promote environmental stewardship, economic resilience, and social well-being.

“In the next two days, we will delve into a variety of critical themes, including: Sustainable technologies and innovations and Industry-academia research partnerships,” he said.

Prof Yusuf encouraged all participants to engage actively in the discussions, share their insights, and explore opportunities for collaboration.

The Vice-Chancellor stressed the need to challenge conventional thinking, push the boundaries of what is possible, and work together to shape a sustainable future for the collaborating institution.

He pointed out that the convergence of diverse expertise and perspectives from the nine universities is a testament to their collective resolve to address the complex challenges facing our world and to seize the opportunities for sustainable development.

He said, “In today’s rapidly evolving world, the traditional boundaries between universities and industries are increasingly blurred.

“Universities are not just centers of learning and research; they are incubators of innovation, shaping the leaders and solutions of tomorrow.

“Similarly, industries are not merely economic entities; they are vital partners in the application of knowledge and the driving force behind societal progress.”

Prof. Yusuf congratulated all the participating universities for the successful pre-conference events, namely the sporting tournament involving Football and table tennis and pre-conference workshop which was held Wednesday, 7th August, 2024.

In her presentation, Prof. Adenike Oladiji, the Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology,  Akure, urged Universities to link with the industries with their areas to modernise to enable them align their research and education programmes meet the needs of the industry.

Prof Oladiji advised University management across the country to engage in partnership with the industry and ensure their curriculum and research projects are need-driven  and up-to-date.

She urged the University management to prepare their students to meet demands of the workforce.

The participating universities are University of Ilorin, Al-Hikmah University, Kwara State University, Malete, Landmark University,  Omu-aran, Summit University, Offa, Ahman Patigi University,  Patigi,  Ojaja University,  Ilorin, Thomas Adewunmi University, Oko and Muhammad Kalmalu-deen University, Ogidi.
