Climate challenges: Expert calls for policy framework to empower agricultural officers
An agricultural expert, Mr Olaide Olawuwo, from Tru Organic Initiative, has called on the government at all levels to implement policy frameworks that support and empower Agricultural Development Programme (ADP) officers.
Olawuwo made the call on Wednesday in Ilorin, at a one-day step-down workshop for farmers on the 2024 seasonal climate prediction and crop weather calendar for Kwara State.
He said the policy frameworks should empower ADP officers and stakeholders in the agricultural value chain in a bid to equip them with the necessary knowledge to assist farmers in improving productivity amidst evolving climate conditions.
The workshop, organized by HEDA Resource Centre in collaboration with the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet), focused on enlightening farmers about adapting to climate changes to enhance food production.
Olawuwo, who coordinated the workshop for HEDA, highlighted the critical role of ADP officers in supporting farmers.
He emphasized the need for continuous education and capacity-building to ensure farmers receive up-to-date information on climate conditions and agricultural practices.
Olawuwo noted that effective support systems are crucial for addressing the challenges of climate change and achieving sustainable agricultural development in Kwara State.
This initiative underscores the importance of proactive measures and informed strategies to bolster agricultural resilience and ensure food security in the face of global climate change.
The workshop attracted various farming groups, including Small-scale Women Farmers Organisation in Nigeria (SWOFON), ADP, and All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) and Justice Development and Peace Movement (JDPM).
Participants were provided with essential climate and crop weather forecasts to aid their decision-making for the upcoming planting season.
