Gov. Mohammed Pays Over N396m External Examination Fees for 14,170 Students

Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi state has released N396.9 million to pay for the 2023/2024 external examination of 14,170 students in the public schools.

The Bauchi state Commissioner for Education Dr Jamila Dahiru disclosed this at a news conference in Bauchi on Monday.

She highlighted the examinations to include the West African Examination Council (WAEC), the National Examination Council (NECO), National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS) and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

According to her, the move by the state governor would not only be contributing to improve access to education by the students in the state but would also be cushioning the effect of economic hardship faced by some parents and guardians.

The Commissioner, who commended governor Mohammed for his unwavering commitment and support toward the upliftment of the education sector in the state, added that he had also offset a total of N800 million external examinations fees incurred by previous administration.

She explained that an aptitude test was conducted for all the students to ascertain their level of preparedness for the external examinations where those that passed with A,B,C and D were selected and those who didn’t pass would have their parents or guardians pay for the examinations.

Dahiru disclosed that about 7,000 students did not pass this year’s aptitude test even as simple as it was.

“We are considering our index students which means our genuine students.

“Over the years, we have introduced a way of checkmating the genuineness of our number of students through SS1 to SS3.

“Immediately after the Basic Education Certificate Examination, students are given numbers that they carry through SS1 to SS3 making them the eligible students that we have in our schools.

“So, these are the students that are considered whenever the government is paying for sponsorship of external examinations,” she said.
