Senate Halts Proposed Electricity Tariff Increase, Subsidy Removal

The Nigerian Senate has decisively rejected both the planned increase in electricity tariffs and the removal of electricity subsidies.

This decision emerged during a plenary session where Senator Aminu Abbas’ motion on retaining electricity subsidies was considered and approved.

This action counters last week’s announcement by the Power Minister, Adebayo Adelabu, who expressed the unlikelihood of sustaining the current subsidies due to a N3 trillion debt to power and gas companies.

The Senate, however, stands firm in its opposition, emphasizing the already existing hardships faced by Nigerians.

Spokesperson Yemi Adraamodu declared, “It would not allow any hike in the price of electricity that may add to the woes of Nigerians.”

This strong stance reflects the Senate’s concern for the people’s welfare and signifies a potential hurdle for the proposed changes.

While the full implications remain to be seen, this development clearly adds a layer of complexity to the already multifaceted issue of power sector reform in Nigeria.
