FG Trains, Empowers 250 Smallholders Farmers

The Federal Government has trained and empowered 250 small holders farmers with farm inputs in an effort to alleviate poverty in the country.

The Permanent Secetary, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS), Mr Temitope Fadeshemi,disclosed this at flag off of the event on Tuesday in Ilorin.

Represented by, Dr Aliyu Isa, the state Coordinator of the Ministry, said that the FMAFS in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning organized the training for empowerment and distribution of agricultural inputs to youths and women for national poverty reduction with growth strategies.

According to him, the level of Poverty in Nigeria is aalarmng.

“An estimated population of 88.4million people are living in extreme poverty in Nigeria.

“The number of men living on the less than 1.90 US dollars a day in the country reached around 44.7 million while the account was at 43..7 million for women.

” Overall 12.9 of the global population in extreme poverty was found in Nigeria as of 2022.

“This why the federal government of Nigeria through the Ministry of Budget and National Planning in collaboration with FMAFS is making conscious effort at reducing the rate of poverty in the country”,he said.

He said the Federal Department of Agricultural Extension Service has diligently enumerated and validated approximately 250 farmers for participation in this transformative programme.

The Kwara Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources , Mrs Olohuntoyosi Thomas urged the beneficiaries to use the resources judiciously in order to alleviate their poverty.

Represented by the Permanent Secetary of the Ministry, Mr Olorukoba Isiah, advised the beneficiary not to sell it , adding that their team is coming to inspect it.

He commended the state government for it’s support throughout theprogramme.

The Managing Director, Kwara Agricultural Development, Dr. Ahmed Khadijat, urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the resources for continuity and sustainability.

One of the beneficiaries, Mr Banuso Musamil, commended the government for the programme, saying that it is a life saving one

He  said that if the programme is sustained, it will be a life changer for the farmers.
