EFCC deepens synergy with local, foreign agencies against corruption – Olukoyede

Ola Olukoyede, chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), says the agency is deepening synergy with local and foreign law enforcement bodies in the fight against corruption in Nigeria.

Olukoyede spoke at an event to mark the 2023 International Anti-Corruption Day, on Saturday. He said the commission under his watch, remains committed to collaboration and synergy with local and foreign law enforcement agencies to rid the country of corruption.

The EFCC boss said: “As we all know, today is International Anti-Corruption Day and for us at the EFCC, it is a special occasion; it offers us an opportunity to review our works, engage with stakeholders and consider fresh perspectives to consolidate the gains of the fight against economic and financial crimes and other forms of corrupt practices.

“All over the world, corruption is a threat to the growth and development of individuals and nations. No one is immune to the contagion of corruption which is why nations are united in finding solutions to this common ailment.

It is fitting that the theme of the 2023 International Anti-Corruption Day is UNCAC @ 20: Uniting the World against Corruption. This a tribute to the revolutionary impact which this organ of the United Nations has had in mobilising and directing global action against corruption.”

On the landmark initiatives and recommendations of UNCAC that have shaped the global anti-corruption movement, he explained that the agency is concerned about how best to do the needful by rededicating and recommitting themselves to the implementation of all suggestions by the anti-corruption organ.

“For us at the EFCC, we remain committed to working with the corruption prevention template recommended by UNCAC.

“In driving this prevention focus, the Commission under my watch will prioritise these focal areas: collaboration and synergy with local and foreign law enforcement agencies, professionalism and strict adherence to the rule of law as the absolute minimum in all activities of the commission.

“Only through professionalism and adherence to the rule of law will the commission be able to contribute to economic growth by restoring investors’ confidence in our economy.

“Our focus makes it imperative for us to create conducive environments for job creation, the opening of investment space across the country, and improvement on our international image.

“I want every EFCC operative to be more diligent and resourceful on our assigned tasks. My leadership will punish infractions traceable to unethical practices.

“We are joining the rest of the world today to say, corruption is injurious to human development. I want this to be an article of faith for all of us. As we do all these, every threat to development in our nation would be destroyed.

“As a member of the global community, EFCC will continue to play its role in the fight against corruption, and together we will achieve a corruption-free world.”

Micheal Nzekwe, the Ilorin zonal commander led the massive turnout of residents in the Ilorin metropolis on a “Walk Against Corruption”.

He appreciated sister agencies, royal fathers, government officials, association bodies, NYSC members, media, and others who participated in the early morning walk.

He said: “I thank you all. The turnout shows that we are united against corruption in Kwara, so let the synergy continue.”

The event, according to him, was to increase anti-corruption awareness campaign among Nigerians and encourage a culture of integrity and accountability among a new generation of citizens.
