Peter Obi Opens Up on Why He Didn’t Step Down for Atiku in 2023 Election

Former vice presidential candidate and Labour Party (LP) flagbearer in the 2023 presidential election, Peter Obi, has shed light on his decision not to step down for his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) counterpart, Atiku Abubakar.

FTN reports that this comes two weeks after the Supreme Court’s verdict upholding President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the February 25 presidential election.

Obi, who served as Atiku’s running mate in the 2019 presidential election under the PDP banner, left the party before the 2023 polls following internal wrangling.

He subsequently joined the LP and emerged as a strong contender, securing victory in 12 states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In a press briefing on Monday, Obi clarified his reasons for declining to step down or collaborate with Atiku. He said his commitment to advocating for a new Nigeria, a stance that differentiated him from other presidential candidates.

He said, “We don’t regret anything we did. We came out on a campaign for a new Nigeria which no other person did.

Recall that the Supreme Court had on October 26 dismissed the petitions of both Atiku and Obi, citing lack of sufficient evidence to support their claims.
