Expert Advocates Quality, Affordable Mental Health Care
Mental Health Professional, Dr Aliyu Abdulateef has advocated the need to access quality mental health care at affordable cost in the country.
Dr Aliyu made the call at the World Mental Health Day 2023 With the theme: “Mental health is a Universal Human right: Our Minds Our Rights” at the General hospital Ilorin the Kwara State capital.
Dr. Aliyu Abdulateef, a Senior Registrar in Psychiatry who noted that all aspects of human rights relate to mental health,
said “we all have the right to access quality mental health care and it should be at affordable costs.”
This was contained in a statement issued by Press Secretary General Hospital Ilorin Fatima Baraje Ahmed and made available to newsmen in Ilorin
He noted that the objective of the theme: “Mental Health is a fundamental human right” is to ensure that everyone has the right to the highest standard of affordable and quality care.
He reiterated that to achieve these objectives, “mental health gap” needs have to be considered to enhance the formulation and appropriate implementation of mental health policies and plans.”
“World Mental Health Day” which is celebrated every 10th of October is an international day for global mental health education, awareness, and advocacy against social stigma and has been celebrated since 1992. The day provides an opportunity for mental health professionals to discuss and shed light on their work and advancement in mental health care.
Dr Aliyu explained that the day was set aside to provide opportunity to stimulate policy makers, politicians and other stakeholders on issues around mental health.
Mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stress of life, realize their abilities, learn well, work well and contribute to their community.
